Topcon Healthcare, Inc. is kicking off a new partnership with OKKO Health via a strategic investment in the software medical device company’s at-home vision monitoring system.
This is just the latest financial move Topcon has made in recent months to support its ongoing Healthcare from the Eye initiative (more on that below).
Let’s stick with Topcon.
As a division of Topcon Corporation, a Japanese optical equipment manufacturer, the global provider of ophthalmic medical devices and software solutions launched its Healthcare from the Eye initiative in May 2024.
What to know about that initiative: This is a clinical strategy where artificial intelligence (AI) models are applied to imaging data (from the eye) to enable earlier detection and better management of ocular and systemic diseases.
- Key to this: Is the utilization of Topcon’s Harmony, a clinical image and data management platform for streamlining clinical practice workflows and organizing ophthalmic clinical data.
And with this initiative in mind …
The company has been on a marathon sprint, making new acquisitions and investments as well as launching strategic collaborations ever since.
Case in point: Take a look at Topcon’s most recent moves since just May 2025, including:
- Investments in Pangaea Data’s PALLUX artificial intelligence (AI) platform and EYE-GO’s next-generation MistGo Digital ophthalmic drug delivery system
- Launch of The Institute of Digital Health (IDHea), an AI-based ocular digital health platform

Now to OKKO.
Based in the United Kingdom, OKKO is the developer of home-based, vision-measuring monitoring applications that incorporate advanced vision science, data analytics, and “gamified user experiences" to enable monitoring in between clinic visits.
More specifically: The company has developed smartphone (or tablet)-embedded software designed as digital games that provide accurate remote monitoring of eye health via vision measurements.
Tell me about this software.
The OKKO Health app is designed to acquire and visualize objective, quantifiable data related to visual function, including visual acuity (VA)
Its purpose: To help adult patients diagnosed with (or at risk of) macular degeneration with self-monitoring from home—a sort of “safety net” for patients when they’re waiting to be seen by their clinician in-office.
- Note:
- The software also supports disease care models involving longer-acting injectable and implantable therapeutics
- The data aggregated from this monitoring is available for both the patient and clinician to view (with a clinician dashboard view also accessible)
And how is the data quantified, exactly?
That would be through vision tests delivered as digital puzzle games for patients to complete—designed to “make it easy for patients to track their real-world visual function,” according to OKKO CEO and founder Stephanie Campbell, PhD.
Importantly: The company recommends patients play these games at least three times a week for the most accurate results (monitoring one or both eyes).
What else is available within the app?

The app operates as a companion tool and includes both a treatment diary function and an education module for two other ocular diseases: dry eye and presbyopia.
- OKYYO for dry eye: This patient education and engagement platform provides clinicians’ marketing materials directly to patients.
- Shares educational-based articles and videos to patients to support self-care
- Enables patients to share feedback on symptom improvement
- Gives patients further personalized recommendations for care
- OKKO for presbyopia: Provides customized pre- and post-consult education for patients on available options to correct their presbyopia.
- Includes a presbyopia vision measuring tool via a “puzzle game” style vision test that produces a near vision comfort score that increases when presbyopic vision is applied
- Based on low-contrast VA
- Includes a presbyopia vision measuring tool via a “puzzle game” style vision test that produces a near vision comfort score that increases when presbyopic vision is applied
So what’s the purpose behind this software?
Two main goals:
- Enabling early disease detection of subtle changes in visual function
- Helping patients receive “timely re-engagement” care with their eyecare provider (ECP) when and if disease progression calls for it.
And how does Topcon’s investment play into this?
To note: The company did not share an exact monetary amount tied to the investment.
As for the intent: Campbell added that the global company’s involvement will help to expand access to OKKO's software.
- “We see this as a powerful extension of our mission to deliver proactive, data-driven, and personalized eye care,” stated Ali Tafreshi, Topcon’s CEO and president.
So will this app be available for U.S. patients?
As part of its new partnership with Topcon—yes. The companies’ investment announcement also signifies OKKO Health’s U.S. launch.
Nice! Last question: How can I demo it?
