Topcon and RemoniHealth to advance AI-based chronic eye disease monitoring

Topcon Healthcare and RemoniHealth announced a new commercial partnership centered around artificial intelligence (AI)-based remote monitoring and management of chronic eye disease.

Notably: This collaboration marks the first in the new year for Topcon, which spent much of 2025 building its portfolio of strategic investments, acquisitions, and product launches.

Let’s stick with Topcon—talk about the reason for all these recent moves.

All roads (or should we say developments) lead back to the Japanese-based ophthalmic medical devices and software solutions manufacturer's ongoing Healthcare from the Eye initiative.

Seeing as how it’s been a minute since we’ve mentioned this, click here for a refresh on the clinical strategy that kicked off in 2024.

  • The basic premise behind it: In a nutshell, this initiative applies artificial intelligence (AI) models to noninvasive retinal imaging data to enable earlier detection and better management of ocular and systemic diseases.

… I’m sure there’s more to it than that.

Indeed. We can’t forget the key technology involved in this strategy: Topcon’s Harmony platform.

What that is: A clinical image and data management platform for streamlining clinical practice workflows and organizing ophthalmic clinical data.

Alrighty, now to the second half of this partnership: RemoniHealth.

RemoniHealth is a software platform that provides at-home digital monitoring and care management services to eyecare practices (both ophthalmic and optometric).

Specifically: The platform enables practices to deliver continuous, real-time remote care for chronic eye diseases—such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and glaucoma—by combining:

  • Validated digital tests
  • AI-assisted analytics
  • Care-coordination tools
  • Reimbursement workflows

Notably: It also reportedly supports the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Category I Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) and Principal Care Management (PCM) reimbursement pathways.

Tell me more about these services.

Through the software platform, eyecare providers (ECPs) can offer patients four established, clinically validated software tools for remote vision testing: Accustat, Macustat, Peristat, and Photostat.

According to RemoniHealth, these tests are FDA-cleared, HIPAA-compliant, and software-based.

Looking at them more closely: Macustat | Accustat is a 3-minute test that uses hyperacuity and Amsler grid tests to detect early retinal function issues (macular degeneration or DR):

  • Macustat is described as a high-precision, clinical grade, FDA-registered technology remotely accessible via a computer or mobile device.
  • Accustat is a visual acuity (VA) test for monitoring central vision, performing similarly to in-office tests such as the Snellen chart to track retinal function changes over time.

And those other two tests?

RemoniHealth describes Peristat as a 5-minute, FDA-registered online test—conducted at home—that offers early disease detection and progression monitoring.

  • In other words: The test evaluates a patient’s peripheral visual function (ideal for glaucoma).

Photostat utilizes AI and a smartphone or computer’s camera to monitor changes in eye motility and ocular surface parameters, operating as a sort of “virtual eye technician” for an ECP.

  • The ideal patients to be monitored with this test: Those with thyroid eye disease (TED), conjunctivitis, strabismus, and some neurologic conditions

So how does this work with providers?

See here for a breakdown of the process. One thing to note: RemoniHealth emphasized that it “ensures reimbursement criteria [are] met” for users.

Nice! I can see why Topcon would want to partner with this platform.

Right? Topcon’s President and CEO Ali Tafreshi even went so far as to say that RemoniHealth capabilities “align perfectly” with the company’s ongoing initiative goals.

How: By “extending care into the home and delivering real-time insights that enable earlier intervention and better outcomes,” he stated.

So what’s the plan?

Integration. Specifically: RemoniHealth’s remote-monitoring and care-management technology with Topcon’s connected-care infrastructure.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Topcon partnership if it didn’t involve its aforementioned Harmony platform.

Per the company, the collaboration will also create a pathway incorporating RemoniHealth's capabilities into Harmony to give “clinicians a more complete, longitudinal view of each patient’s disease trajectory to bridge the clinic and the home and enable more proactive, personalized care.”
