Olleyes is introducing a new virtual reality platform (VRP) for eyecare practices called TechALL, which offers remote support from ophthalmic technicians across the United States..
First up: a refresh on Olleyes.
The privately-held medical software company specializes in developing portable, VR-based diagnostic platforms for the eyecare field.
More specifically: Olleyes’ diagnostic technology is intended for both in-office and at-home evaluations of ophthalmic diseases, such as:
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- Diabetic retinopathy (DR)
- Glaucoma
And its flagship product is the VisuALL VRP, an FDA-registered, Class I medical device that performs virtual field (VF) tests via the use of a portable headset.
But more on that later.
Alrighty, now to this newest technology.
Essentially, the TechALL VRP enables VF tests to be performed on patients by a remote ophthalmic technician—“freeing office staff to perform other tasks,” according to the company and allowing for “a significant boost in clinical productivity.”
- An interactive VR interface allows patients “on-demand access” to trained professionals—such as certified ophthalmic technicians (COTs).
Talk more about the added benefits for practices.
Olleyes offered four main advantages the TechALL VRP can provide clinicians and their staff:
- Expanded availability of technicians (without hiring additional full-time staff)
- Increased patient throughput and minimized downtime
- Consistent, continual delivery of “high-quality” care during potential staffing shortages
- Availability of a flexible and modern-designed platform to connect with other practices
So these technicians can be located anywhere?
Anywhere within the United States, yes.
As Olleyes CEO Alberto Gonzalez, MD, noted, TechALL allows for practices to scale delivery and “opens a new channel for skilled technicians to work remotely, offering their expertise to practices in need—whether across town or across the country."
Nice! Now let’s talk more about the VF testing Olleyes offers.
To do that, we’ll need to talk about the company’s aforementioned flagship product: VisuALL VRP.
What it is: A head-mounted visual perimeter device that doubles as a VR-VF assessment system.
Its capabilities: Enabling simultaneous binocularity during VF testing and gamification of the overall testing strategy—including performing comprehensive tests such as:
- Visual acuity VA)
- Color vision
- Pupillometry
- Extraocular motility
See here and here for details on its two available models (ETS and S, respectively).
Talk features.
The VisuALL platform comes equipped with a headset and ultra-high-definition (4K HD) resolution (for the full, immersive VR experience) as well as:
- A fully integratable suite of diagnostic tools for comprehensive testing
- Controls light interference to allow for testing throughout the day
- Portable design enables transportation to any testing site
- “Dynamic Matrix” proprietary testing algorithm (to reduce fixation loss to zero)
- Includes an eye tracking system that accounts for minute eye movements
- Pediatric protocols, with testing optimized for children’s attention spans
- Includes animated and gamified testing (along with child-friendly methods for pediatric patients)
- A virtual assistant fluent in 30+ languages
Explain how this all works.
The VisuALL VR software suite encompasses the VR headset, a cloud platform (the VisuALL Cloud), and a web application (the VisuALL webApp)—which integrate into one system.
To note: All interaction and integration of these technologies (and between the patient and provider) are stored and managed by the HIPAA-compliant Microsoft Azure.
And how does Olleyes’ tech compare to standard VF testing methods?
Funny you should ask … we actually covered research on this very topic back in 2023.
- Those details: Researchers compared the VisuALL VRP to conventional Humphrey VF for performing standard automated perimetry (SAP) among pediatric glaucoma patients—and drew positive conclusions in favor of the technology.
So … are demos available of the new TechALL (same question for VisuALL)?
Indeed. Contact the company.
