Less than 6 months after receiving FDA 501(k) clearance, Bausch + Lomb has announced the launch of Biotrue Hydration Boost Contact Lens Eye Drops in the US.

Wait … didn’t the company already launch a product this week?

Yup they did!  B+L also announced the US launch of its INFUSE multifocal silicone hydrogel (SiHy) contact lenses on June 5, 2023 (a busy week, to say the least).

But back to this most recent product…

Tell me about this Biotrue portfolio.

B+L’s Biotrue products are novel formulations containing naturally-inspired ingredients such as hyaluronan (HA), a moisturizer naturally found in tears, as well as an antioxidant (which can protect HA from free radicals), glycerin, and electrolytes.

Other Biotrue products include:

And the brand has also expanded to include Biotrue Contact Lenses .

Now give me a rundown on these drops.

As the first and only preservative-free rehydrating drop in a multi-dose bottle, the Biotrue Hydration Boost eye drops are indicated for the temporary relief of burning and irritation due to dryness of the eye along with being contact lens friendly (soft contact lenses and rigid gas permeables included).

See here for the product label.

Talk about the formulation.

As with other Biotrue products, the drops are formulated with the same four ingredients (all per the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society DEWS II report): HA, glycerin, electrolytes, and an antioxidant.

A surfactant is also included, which works to prevent lens deposit buildup and matches the pH of healthy tears to potentially ensure drop comfort.

How long do the drops last?

The drops provide moisture to the eyes instantaneously and may provide relief up to 8 hours after instillation.

Where can I find them?

According to B+L, the drops can be purchased in 10 mL bottles at most national retailers around the country: Walmart, CVS, Amazon, and Target. Look for “Local Retailer” on the Biotrue Hydration Boost homepage to locate a retailer near you.

What else should I know?

The bottles are able to be recycled via B+L’s Biotrue Eye Care Recycling Program (part of a collaboration with TerraCycle, a US-based recycling business).
