Volk Optical is introducing a new ophthalmic lens to its product portfolio: the ClearField Pro Lens, designed for retinal examination and laser treatment.

The latest addition is debuting during the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) 2026 annual meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, this weekend.

First, let’s get a look at Volk.

Operating out of Mentor, Ohio, the global provider of ophthalmic lenses and imaging solutions is part of Halma plc.

Its business is rooted in precision optices—with a product portfolio encompassing ophthalmic lenses, surgical viewing systems, and imaging products:

  • Diagnostic lenses: slit-lamp, binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO), and gonioscopy
  • Laser treatment lenses: for retinal laser and anterior-segment laser procedures
  • Imaging devices: handheld and portable fundus cameras

As for disease targets: Volk’s devices are built for use across multiple conditions, including retinal disease, glaucoma, and general screenings for preventable blindness.

And this new addition?

ClearField Pro comprises three main components: advanced coatings, redesigned aspheric optics, and lighter handling—reportedly weighing 10% less than a standard 20 diopter (D) lens—but with a precision-milled grip.

The intent: to support clear retinal visualization (including in small pupils) during laser indirect ophthalmoscopy as well as “crisp peripheral details with less image distortion.”

Let’s get a closer look at these features.

The lens’ anti-reflective coatings are reported to provide up to 77% less reflectivity, optimized to minimize unwanted reflections under light-emitting diode (LED) illumination across three laser treatment wavelengths: green, yellow, and infrared.

This helps to preserve both retinal detail and contrast during examination and laser procedures (binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy).

A fingerprint-resistant oleophobic topcoat also offers resistance to oils, reducing smudging and simplifying the optical surface cleaning process.

Some specifications:

  • 55° / 72° field of view
  • 2.80 x image magnification
  • 0.36 x laser spot magnification
  • 37 mm working distance

So! How does ClearField PRO compare to Volk’s original ClearField lens?

It’s a “complete redesign”—from the ground up, the company noted. The only remaining similarity: its ClearField name.

Also take note: The original Digital ClearField lens has since been discontinued.

Duly noted. Now, how can I get a look at this lens for myself?
