Eyes On Eyecare launches retina research-based app

Eyes On Eyecare is debuting a new mobile app for retina specialists and other eyecare professionals (ECPs) to discover, digest, and react to the research shaping their practice.

The digital resource’s launch coincides with this week’s American Society for Retina Specialists (ASRS) annual meeting in Montreal, Canada.

A new app?! Tell me more.

We’ll start with its name: Cited.

The general idea: Think “PubMed meets Instagram Stories,” in which the app delivers a fast, swipeable feed of the latest peer-reviewed retina and ophthalmology research.

Explain the reasoning behind its development.

As EOE noted, Cited is built for the way clinicians actually consume information today: in short bursts, on their phones, between patients, or on their commute.

  • “By pairing trusted summaries with candid peer commentary, the app turns passive literature review into an active, social conversation among the specialists who treat these conditions,” the company stated.

So what's included in this featured research?

Each article available on the app is paired with three key components—with the third being the most critical (and unique) in setting it apart from other research websites:

  • A plain-language artificial intelligence (AI) summary of the research
  • A direct link leading to its original source
  • Short video reactions recorded by practicing ophthalmologists

Expand on this video component.

In lieu of simply reading a clinical abstract on their own, clinicians can also hear retina specialists’ thoughts on the new research via an Instagram Story-style reaction.

In other words: These KOL Stories are essentially short video perspectives (ideally 60 seconds) recorded by retina specialists discussing new research.

  • They’re intended to offer context, caveats, and clinical relevance behind a specific paper to help clinicians understand not just what was published, but what it means in real-world practice.

Gotcha. And where do these papers come from?

The app surfaces peer-reviewed, research-notable clinical journals—Retina, JAMA Ophthalmology, and American Journal of Ophthalmology, for example—curated by EOE’s clinical editorial team.

As we mentioned earlier: Each paper links back to either its primary source or Semantic Scholar.

So ... why should retina specialists use this?

For these clinicians, Cited offers a feed curated around the conditions they treat most —such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR)—and most relevant surgical and pharmacologic advances in retina.

  • “Tell Cited what you treat … and your feed fills with the papers that actually apply to your patients,” according to the app’s website. “No off-topic noise, no scrolling past everything that isn't yours.”

Even further: The app is an invitation for users to contribute their own short video reactions, building a library of expert perspective that helps the broader community eliminate extraneous noise.

Noise, you say?

We did. As EOE CEO Matt Geller, OD, noted: "We built Cited so retina specialists can get all the signal without the noise.”

A side note also worth keeping in mind: Retina’s domination in research may have something to do with retina specialists making up the largest share (22.3%) of subspecialties in ophthalmology.

As such, that translates to quite the volume of research for clinicians to keep with—and Cited is offering a reimagined way to discover, digest, and react to the research shaping their practice.

So when (and how) can ECPs access this app?

It’s available now (!) for iPhone and iPads running iOS 17 or later; to join the Cited conversation, simply download the app (for free!) from the Apple Store.

A word to ophthalmologists: You can sign up using your NPI.

And if I’m attending ASRS 2026 this week ….
