Lumibird Medical is introducing the Integre Laser Indirect Ophthalmoscope (LIO) system as the industry’s first truly wireless integrated LIO for retinal care.

Big news! First though, let’s get reacquainted with this company.

It’s actually a medical division of the France-based Lumibird Group—“one of the world’s leading specialists in lasers.”

In the ophthalmic space, Lumibird Medical specializes in diagnostic and treatment devices for diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, dry eye, and glaucoma.

  • And take note: The company formed as a result of a 2020 merger between Quantel Medical, Optotek, and Ellex Medical Lasers.

Check out a few of its recent product launches.

Alrighty, let’s talk about this new addition.

Integre’s claim to fame as the first truly wireless integrated LIO is intended to support ophthalmologists performing panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) and other peripheral retinal treatments.

Among its features: a wireless headset and foot pedal (for mobility) as well as a metal-jacketed, short fiber optic to minimize the risk for breakages.

And what type of laser?

The system also includes a true green 532 nm wavelength photocoagulator with diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) technology.

  • DPSS technology replaces traditional flashlamps with laser diodes to excite (pump energy into) a solid gain medium—and is typically used to produce lasers with higher power outputs, efficiency, and better beam quality,

Tell me more.

Weighing in at just 2.2 lbs, the system’s patented, lightweight design fully integrates that aforementioned green laser—plus a battery pack—to provide a “compact, ergonomic solution” intended to enhance physicians’ comfort during extended procedures.

Further: The system is designed to be used directly in examination rooms with unrestricted freedom of movement—particularly in instances where physicians may need to rotate 90–180° to reach the peripheral retina.

And the key features that enable this?

Two are worth highlighting:

  • IMPRINT heads-up display (HUD)
    • What this does: Projects real-time power settings directly into the physician’s field of view for instant visibility—without their attention distracting from the patient.
  • Advanced smart footswitch
    • What this does: Enables precise titration of laser parameter settings with a highly visible integrated screen for intuitive, hands-free adjustments.

Can we get a sneak peek of what it looks like?

Yes you can. See this promo video the company posted to its Instagram page.

Among the key words used to describe the system’s capabilities: optimized visualization and real-time control center.

And it’s cleared by the FDA, right?

Indeed. The system has received FDA 510(k) clearance in the United States. See its official listing in the federal agency’s premarket notification database.

Now to the all-important question: Where can ophthalmologists purchase this?

Integre LIO will be available for order directly through Lumibird Medical—click here to view its product page.

And if you’re attending the American Society of Retinal Specialists (ASRS) in Montreal, Canada next month (July 15-18), you’re in for a treat: Lumibird Medical will debut the Integre LIO at its booth (#427).

As a bonus: The company will also be hosting a happy hour event (and offering demos of the system) on July 16 from 6 to 8 pm EST. RSVP here.
