Johnson & Johnson is expanding its rollout of the TECNIS PureSee intraocular lens (IOL) across the U.S. commercial market.
Designed as an extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) lens for use in cataract surgery, the IOL secured FDA approval earlier this year.
Let’s start with TECNIS.
This certainly isn’t the first TECNIS IOL—as the brand’s portfolio already encompasses an array of monofocal and presbyopia-correcting premium lens options.
See here for a look at those. And for details on the core “TECNIS” technology embedded into each lens, head over here.
Now, what should we know about this EDOF IOL?
The TECNIS PureSee IOL is indicated for primary implantation for the visual correction of aphakia in adult patients (ages 22+) with less than 1 diopter (D) of pre-existing corneal astigmatism in whom a cataractous lens has been removed.
A few other items worth noting:
- It’s intended only for capsular bag placement
- It addresses both cataract-related vision loss and the effects of presbyopia (learn how)
- See here for the basics of its implantation process (it involves the TECNIS SIMPLICITY Delivery System)
- Click here for warnings/precautions associated with its use
- Also, check out how this lens compares to aspheric monofocal IOLs
And its claim to fame?
J&J reports that the TECNIS PureSee is the first and only FDA-approved EDOF IOL with no warning on loss of contrast sensitivity.
See the clinical data on this.
What vision advantages come with this lens?
According to J&J:
- A monofocal-like visual disturbance profile (visual of this here)
- Contrast sensitivity maintenance (check it out)
- Distance and intermediate (with some near) range of vision
- Tolerance to refractive error (supporting data here)
Also, hear from a couple of clinical experts on their experience (thus far) implanting the lens.
Now, let’s not forget it’s currently Cataract Awareness Month …
Indeed, it is. On that note, J&J is also offering a new patient lifestyle quiz for those interested in seeing which IOL may be most appropriate for them.

The idea behind this: To serve as a first step in educating patients and speaking with their eyecare provider (ECP) about their IOL options.
Lastly, how can I get a hold of this lens for my qualifying patients?
