FGH Science, a subsidiary of FGH Biotech, LLC, is introducing a new daily cleanser to its portfolio of periocular-focused products: LidRevive Pro Lash and Eyelid Shampoo.

Coinciding with this launch, Glance President Jaclyn Garlich, OD, FAAO, spoke with one clinician on just how impactful LidRevive has proven to be when utilized by patients as part of regular ocular surface management.

A shampoo?! Amazing … but first, a look at FGH.

The Houston, Texas-headquartered FGH Biotech is a biotechnology company specializing in research and development of small-molecule drugs that regulate sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP) transcription factors — a pathway involved in fat metabolism, obesity, metabolic diseases, and cancer.

FGH Science, on the other hand, is focused exclusively on its portfolio of periocular-targeting products designed to block lipid toxicity, support tear performance, and optimize visual quality.

Chief among these: the trademarked LidRevive brand.

Before we talk about LidRevive, explain this periocular focus.

Proper eyelid and lash hygiene maintenance is critical for ocular surface management.

Why: Because debris buildup along the lid margins and periocular skin could potentially lead to ocular surface instability and, as a result, patient discomfort.

As such: A consistent and daily lid hygiene routine is critical — particularly for cataract or refractive surgery patients, where a clean and healthy periocular and ocular surface can go a long way to ensure a successful, pain-free postoperative recovery.

Now to this product.

Lid Revive Pro Lash and Eyelid Shampoo is marketed as a “gentle eyelid and eyelash cleanser” intended for twice-daily use to remove oil, debris, and residue from the eyelid margin and lashes.

See below for the simple routine.

More specifically: With one pump per eye, the shampoo provides periocular skin barrier hydration and antioxidants—all while supporting repeated use on sensitive periocular tissues.

Tell me more about this formulation.

The basics: It’s pH-balanced, free from parabens, sulfates, alcohol, and added fragrance—and has undergone ophthalmologist-administered testing to ensure its safety and suitability for routine eyelid hygiene (and ocular surface comfort).

To support the appearance of healthy skin and lashes, the formulation features a proprietary blend of:

  • MetaboLight D (a registered trademarked form of Vitamin D representing small molecules that inhibit lipid and cholesterol synthesis)
  • 15+ amino acids

Explain how these ingredients provide a lasting effect.

MetaboLight D’s use of Vitamin D—which plays a critical, anti-inflammatory role in reducing eyelid redness and irritation—includes helping to regulate the metabolic pathway affecting lipid production in the meibomian glands.

Looking specifically at amino acids, these play a key role in contributing to protein synthesis and cellular repair processes involved in maintaining skin structure (collagen and elastin, for example)—as well as:

  • Keep the eye area smooth, firm, and hydrated
  • Strengthen the lashes and reduce breakage
  • Protect the skin from signs of stress due to pollution or sun exposure

Is there a specific patient base that may benefit from the shampoo?

As we mentioned earlier, patients either preparing for or recovering from ophthalmic surgery should ensure they have a clean and healthy periocular and ocular surface.

And though “Anyone wanting cleaner, refreshed eyelids” can use the cleanser, LidRevive highlighted the following patients in particular:

  • Makeup or lash extension wearers
  • Contact lens wearers (soft, specialty, or orthokeratology lenses)
  • Frequent screen users (to mitigate digital eye strain)
  • Outdoor workers or athletes
  • Those enrolled in myopia management programs

Now an important question: Has this cleanser undergone clinical testing?

Indeed it has—but not under the LidRevive brand.

Outside of the United States, the formulation is available for commercial use under the name Eye Shampoo by the Japan-based MediProduct Co. Ltd.

As such: Multiple clinical studies were conducted using the shampoo on various patient demographics, with positive results supporting its use in resolving and alleviating OSD symptoms.

… for example?

One 2019 prospective study published in the Journal of Oleo Science (JOS) investigated the shampoo’s safety and efficacy among 34 patients (34 eyes) with obstructive meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), in which it was used to cleanse the lid margin at least once a day for one month.

  • The results: After one month, significant improvements were observed in 27/34 (80%) patients for:
    • Tear break-up time (TBUT)
    • Ld margin lissamine green staining scores
    • Vascular dilation
    • Meibum status (p < 0.05)

And a 2021 retrospective study published in JOS evaluated the shampoo as a “novel lid hygiene detergent” in cleaning the lid margin of patients with “ocular demodicosis” (Demodex blepharitis).

  • The results: Four out of five (80%) patients who used the shampoo once a day for 3 months successfully eliminated Demodex mites and demonstrated improved ocular conditions, with no recurrence.

Let’s talk real-world clinical use.

Back in the United States, Maria Laura Gómez Freeman, OD, FAAO, an assistant professor of Ophthalmology and director of the Dry Eye Clinic at the Shiley Institute, UC San Diego, has already begun using LidRevive on her patients.

As Dr. Freeman noted: “This is one product that is easy to use, very well tolerable, and—because those amino acids—helps to actually maintain the structure of the lids and lashes without damage.”
