Alcon is introducing TOTAL30 Multifocal (MF) for Astigmatism—the first (and only) MF toric contact lens designed with its proprietary water gradient technology—to the U.S. commercial market.

Back up just a moment here … this isn’t the first TOTAL30 lens to launch, right?

Certainly not. In fact, Alcon already offers three variations of its TOTAL30 lenses:

So what makes these lenses unique?

Each lens:

  • Is designed with Alcon's proprietary PRECISION BALANCE 8 | 4 lens design for on-eye stability and available in both spheric toric and MF variations.
    • See here for a more in-depth look at this.
  • Filters 34% of blue-violet light rays and blocks +90% ultraviolet (UV) A and B rays

And perhaps most importantly, the TOTAL30 lenses are included in the family of Alcon WaterInnovations lenses—the first and only reusable monthly lenses designed with two key patient comfort-targeted technologies.

Which are…?

  • Water Gradient Technology
    • Includes nearly 100% water at the outermost lens surface, ensuring nothing comes in contact with the eye aside from a “gentle cushion of moisture.”
    • Designed to provide 3x greater surface lubricity and at least 5x softer lens surface
  • CELLIGENT Technology
    • A biomimetic lens surface offering 90% resistance to bacteria as well as lipid adherence for a cleaner lens that also helps the Water Gradient’s 30-day longevity.

Noted. So about this latest lens — who are its target patients?

Ideally, the TOTAL30 MF for Astigmatism toric lens is intended for astigmatic presbyopes with a monthly replacement schedule.

Why target this patient group: Various reasons, from a growing need for MF toric contact lenses to a (four times) higher contact lens drop-out rate reported among presbyopes versus wearers below age 40 (due to comfort).

  • For more data: See here for a look at recent generational contact lens trends (and here for a look at improving MF lens designs).

And the power range?

The lenses are available with a full power range of:

  • +6.00 D to -10.00 D (in 0.25D steps)
  • Three ADD powers (low, medium, and high)
  • Cylinder offerings: 0.75, 1.25, 1.75

So what’s the clinical data on them?

Alcon reported “seamless vision at all distances” for early, moderate, and advanced presbyopes when evaluated in clinical assessments.

  • See here for more from the company’s “data on file” clinical performance evaluation.

Lastly, is this already available in the U.S.?

Yes! Per Alcon, the lens will also be available in limited international markets later this year.
