Rinsada announced a new exclusive distribution agreement with Eye Drop Shop that will introduce its namesake eyelid irrigating retractor to the Canadian commercial market as an officially-registered medical device.

First, let’s take a look at this medical device.

Rinsada is a first-of-its-kind irrigating lid retractor designed to reset the ocular tear film by irrigating the entire ocular surface (including the palpebral conjunctiva and fornix) with a single use.

Already cleared by the FDA as a Class I sterile medical device and commercially launched in 2023 (see where it’s offered), the in-office treatment allows clinicians to thoroughly flush the ocular surface—removing buildup typically unreachable with standard irrigation.

  • Included in this: Biofilm, allergens, debris, and toxins.

See here for a rundown on how this patent-designed device works.

And what clinical research is available on it?

Most recently:

  • Check out this case study evaluating Rinsada’s use as an in-office treatment with an additive effect in targeting the beginnings of the allergy cascade.
    • Presented during the 2025 American Academy of Optometry meeting.
  • And see more details on this clinical data detailing the device’s use for dry eye disease (DED), in which it statistically reduced (matrix metalloproteinase-9) “MMP-9 on the ocular surface” and improved “patient symptoms at 3 hours post-rinse.”
    • Presented during the 2023 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) annual meeting.

Now to this new distribution agreement.

The exclusive distributor deal follows the medical device becoming “officially registered” with Health Canada.

More specifically: Rinsada received a license as a Class I medical device from Health Canada earlier this year (in May, to be exact), according to documentation provided by the company and reviewed by Glance.

  • What that means: Generally speaking, a medical device registered with the federal agency indicates it (Rinsada) has met Canada’s regulatory requirements and is legally authorized to be marketed, sold, and used in Canada.

Take note, though: Rinsada is not currently appearing on Health Canada’s Medical Devices Active Licence Listing (MDALL).

So what do we know about this distributor?

Eye Drop Shop is a Canadian online retailer specializing in eyecare products targeting a wide range of conditions. Among the categories:

Fun fact: Both the retailer and Rinsada were launched by eyecare professionals:

  • Eye Drop Shop’s founder: Claudine Courey, OD, MSc, FAAO, FSLS
  • Rinsada’s founder: Srinivas Kondapalli, MD

Fun fact indeed. And are Eye Drop Shop’s products only available in Canada?

Not at all. Although the retailer will be the exclusive provider of Rinsada in Canada, it also ships products to customers in the U.S.
