Lumenis is launching a new and improved iteration of the Digital Duet, a digital selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) with yttrium aluminum arnet (YAG) system.

With new imaging and workflow capabilities, the updated platform is being unveiled during the 2025 American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting.

Tell me about the original Digital Duet.

First launched in 2020 (during AAO, in fact) as the first digital SLT+YAG platform in the U.S. market, Digital Duet debuted as “a comprehensive solution for digital imaging, treatment, and practice efficiency.”

Its treatment targets: glaucoma and posterior capsulotomy procedures

And what makes it unique?

To put it plainly: The system integrates both therapeutic and imaging functions (SLT+YAG) into a single unit—without requiring separate lasers or a slit-lamp camera.

Got it. Now let’s talk functionality.

This all-in-one system offers dual-path laser functionality by supporting two modes for treating trabecular outflow issues as well as performing posterior capsulotomy/iridotomy:

  • SLT (532 nm)
  • YAG (1064 nm)

See here for all specifications for both modes.

And its digital capabilities?

These extend to:

  • Enabling image/video capturing before, during, and following treatment document pathologies, angle imagery, and treatment outcomes
    • Visuals can then be exported or saved to electronic medical records (EMR) systems to reduce manual documentation
  • Automatic generation of procedure reports (to streamline documentation)
  • Live viewing of procedures to enable real-time training for students

Next up: illumination.

The platform is equipped with SmartV illumination technology that’s not only titratable but can also be adjusted on-axis or off-axis.

  • What this does: Improves visualization during capsulotomy, iridotomy, and when assessing vitreous opacities.
  • Optimizes control of red-reflex

And its laser component?

Enter in the Super-Gaussian Beam Profile.

What it is: An optical beam with an intensity profile and distribution hovering between being a standard, bell-shaped Gaussian beam and a pure flat-top beam.

What it does: Delivers photodisruptive effects with less energy and time (but more uniform energy overall to the tissue), for lower optical breakdown.

  • Why this is important: A profile such as this reduces the risk for thermal damage to the periphery—and still enables an effective treatment.

Now let’s get into these updates.

Dubbed Digital Duet 2.0, the next-generation system is equipped with an advanced integrated camera to enable and support:

  • Live viewing
  • High-quality image capturing
  • Video recording
  • Diagnosis capabilities
  • Documentation
  • Communication

So how does the design compare to the original platform?

A few new components are featured—with the intent for a more “doctor-focused” concept:

  • Heads-up display (HUD)
  • Full high-definition (HD) 15.6-inch touchscreen
    • Integrates all imaging, data, and laser controls into a single workspace
  • Optimized anterior and posterior offset

Go on …

Similar to the original platform, the 2.0 version integrates with EMR/EHR systems to simplify documentation and enable secure data exchange.

And keeping with the simplification: It also automatically generates and exports customizable clinical reports to reduce administrative burden as well as allow consistent data management and collaboration across various clinical settings (clinics, hospitals, and vision care networks).

Tell me more.

  • Clinicians can also monitor progress while capturing a “wide range of pathologies” such as angle imagery
  • The platform offers adjustable imaging brightness and optimized visualization (for optimal clarity and precision)

Nice! So … where can I get a first look at this 2.0 version?

Attending AAO? If so, you’re in luck — stop by the Lumenis booth (#3021) to check out the new and improved Digital Duet for yourself.

Otherwise, reach out to the company directly for details on adding this to your practice (and, for current Digital Duet users, how to upgrade).
