Bausch + Lomb Corporation is introducing an all-in-one contact lens to its specialty and gas permeable (GP) lens portfolio: ASANA.

First, a look at this GP lens portfolio.

From orthokeratology (ortho-k) and scleral to custom soft contact lenses (for keratoconus, too), the company’s brands include:

  • Arise, an intelligent ortho-k fitting system to treat myopia
  • Zenlens, featuring advanced features to address scleral misalignment
  • Revive, a custom soft lens line for patients with unique vision needs
  • Novakone, custom soft lenses for keratoconus
  • Boston, GP lens materials for a wide range of special designs for various visual needs
  • SilSoft, soft lenses specifically designed for patients who have had cataract surgery with aphakia

See the full portfolio.

Among the benefits associated with these: Crisper vision, deposit resistance, affordability, and durability.

Now to ASANA.

The ASANA GP lenses are custom designed to provide advanced visual acuity and all-day shape maintenance. Among their characteristics and offerings:

  • Rigid lens material to resist protein and fatty deposits to maintain clarity and comfort
  • Strong resistance to breaking and chipping (requiring fewer replacements)

As B+L’s Yang Yang, president of Global Vision Care, noted: ASANA completes the company’s Specialty Vision Products Lens portfolio by offering “eyecare professionals a catalog of customizable GP lenses designed to fit each patient’s unique corneal curves.”

And which lens designs are available?

The ASANA is available in an array of contact lens types, including:

  • Spherical
  • Aspheric
  • Toric
  • Multifocal/multifocal toric
  • Reverse geometry
  • Keratoconic

Take note: These lenses are custom made exclusively with Boston GP lens materials, which feature vision-shaping treatment.

So which patients should consider ASANA?

Those with “more complex vision challenges” such as:

  • High corneal astigmatism or other refractive errors
  • Keratoconus or other corneal irregularities
  • Post-surgical vision correction needs

And any precautions or warnings to be aware of before using them?

Patients are advised of a few potential warnings associated with contact lens wear.

Plus, the following contraindications indicate a patient should not wear the ASANA lenses:

  • Acute or subacute inflammation or infection of the eye’s anterior chamber
  • Corneal hypoesthesia (if not aphakic)
  • Allergic reactions of ocular surface or adnexa that may be induced by contact lens wear or solution use
  • Red or irritated eyes

See the full list.

How about adverse effects?

As with any contact lens, potential side effects may include: eye stinging, burning, itching, or irritation; excessive watering of the eye; eye redness; blurred vision; and dry eye.
