New World Medical is introducing the newest model of its Ahmed ClearPath, a novel non-valved glaucoma drainage device (GDD) designed for intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction among pediatric and adult patients diagnosed with glaucoma.
First, let’s get a rundown on Ahmed ClearPath.
The original Ahmed ClearPath device was granted FDA 510(k) clearance in 2019 before launching to the U.S. commercial market in that same year.
- Its purpose: To manage refractory glaucoma as a non-valved aqueous shunt device—with a reduced risk of complications.
And what makes it unique?
With a flexible material designed to conform to the shape of the eye, the device is available in two tube sizes and two plate sizes:
- Those tube sizes: 305 μm (inner diameter) and 635 μm (outer diameter)
- And those plate sizes: 250 mm2 and 350 mm2
- Smaller (single-quadrant) model: Enables GDD placement between recti muscles without muscle isolation
- Larger model: Winged design and “more posterior position” of the plate avoid rectus muscle insertions and enable more stability of the plate when inserted
Plus: The original device is equipped with a 23-gauge (Ga) needle and a threaded 4-0 polypropylene ripcord.

Now to this new model.
While the Ahmed ClearPath ST also includes the same two plate sizes (250 mm2 and 350 mm2), a major difference from the original device is its smaller tube lumen, according to NWM.
- Specifically: 127 μm (inner diameter) and 457 μm (outer diameter)
The updated device also features a 25-Ga needle (versus 23-Ga) for scleral tunneling and a pre-threaded 6-0 (versus 4-0) Prolene ripcord suture.
Go on …
Another notable component is the device’s anterior fixation eyelets, intended to enable easier suture access and a more posterior plate placement.
So what’s the theme of this Ahmed ClearPath brand?
Flexibility. With both the original and ST versions of the NWM’s GDD, the company emphasized that surgeons can select their preferred device based on a patient’s needs and their surgical preferences.
