The medical diagnostics company identifeye Health announced the commercial launch of its FDA-registered retinal screening platform.

Start with this company.

Originally founded in 2018—and previously known as Tesseract Health—the private health-tech startup is headquartered in Guilford, Connecticut.

Its focus: Developing consumer-friendly medical devices and products to “democratize healthcare” by noninvasively utilizing health information within the retina.

And the platform?

The company’s retinal screening platform is a compact, app-based system with integrated artificial intelligence (AI) and an FDA 510(K)-exempt classification.

Its purpose: To detect early signs of ocular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma, and macular degeneration—as well as (potentially) broader systemic or neurologic markers for:

  • Cardiovascular health
  • Inflammation
  • Neurological inflammation

So how is AI utilized?

The system’s AI-driven automation takes care of complex tasks such as adjusting settings and imaging capture, as well as workflow efficiency and quality control.

Plus: Results’ clinical interpretations are conducted remotely by teleretinal services providers.

According to identifeye HEALTH, the system combines two key features—the identifeye Camera and Portal—to deliver streamlined fundus imaging workflows in point-of-care settings (enabling wider and easier accessibility).

We’ll start with the identifeye Camera.

Its design: This is a lightweight and portable camera (see here for a visual) with an ergonomic design for optimal patient comfort—enabling a more accessible retinal screening.

  • What it does: The fundus imager utilizes advanced automation and an intuitive interface that requires minimal training for clinicians.

And what’s the actual imaging process like?

identifeye HEALTH noted two features and capabilities of the camera:

  • An integrated audio virtual assistant that offers real-time guidance to patients while they’re undergoing imaging
  • An intelligent workflow automation designed to simplify and streamline the imaging process, capturing high-quality fundus images in a matter of minutes

And what else comes with the platform?

The identifeye Portal, a cloud-based solution that gives clinicians and administrators easy access to manage devices, patient reporting, and tracking.

The specifics on this:

  • HIPAA-compliant with patient privacy and data security prioritization
  • Electronic health record (EHR) integration into providers’ existing workflows
  • Flexible and secure imaging reading options
  • Advanced and high-resolution image viewing features

Nice! So, has this been utilized in real-world settings yet?

That’s currently in progress! Pilot programs with “leading health systems and community-based providers” are reported to be in the process of initiation, while the company also shared that it is in active discussion with other potential providers.

Most recently, the system has been utilized by:

  • Remote Area Medical in Ohio (a volunteer mobile clinic offering free medical, dental, and vision care for those in need)
  • Dare to C.A.R.E. in Maryland (a free CD early detection and education program)

Per identifeye HEALTH, more locations are expected in the coming months.

Lastly, where can I learn more about the system (including the cost)?
