HOYA Vision Care is launching two new advanced focus spectacle lenses for patients with early presbyopia: VisuPro All Day and VisuPro Flex.

First, some details on these target patients.

VisuPro is designed and tailored specifically for patients in their late 30s to mid-40s experiencing the first symptoms of presbyopia—referred to as “young presbyopes.”

The tell-tale signs:

  • Blurred vision when reading
  • Difficulty focusing on close-up tasks
  • Headaches or eye strain when working on near tasks for extended periods of time
  • A need for more light, particularly when reading

Why target this patient base?

These patients contribute to the current statistics listing uncorrected refractive error as the most common cause of vision impairment—and the second leading cause of blindness—around the globe.

And in regards to corrective eyewear for them?

Data from recent HOYA-conducted research on 7,043 spectacle-wearing and spectacle-free patients aged 36-44 found that—regardless of spectacle wear—all experienced increasing issues with near-distance vision and using digital devices.

The breakdown:

  • 53% of existing spectacle wearers
    • Notably: Single-vision lens wearers proved “insufficient” for vision improvement
  • 60% of non-spectacle wearers

Thus: VisuPro is designed to assist both lens and non-lens-wearing patient demographics of this age group—including emmetropes, contact lens wearers, and those needing near-vision assistance post-refractive surgery.

Now break these two lenses down.

Both advanced focus spectacle lenses offer different forms of vision correction for these patients.

  • VisuPro All Day: Provides “versatile” vision correction across all distances
    • Target patients: Existing spectacle lens wearers or lens wearers wearing glasses all day
  • VisuPro Flex: Provides “exceptional” (HOYA’s words, mind you) support for near-vision tasks as well as addresses vision correction at other distances
    • Target patients: Spectacle lens wearers who mainly use their lenses for near distance; patients who were emmetropes; and contact lens wearers or patients post-refractive surgeries

And what else makes them special?

They wouldn’t be HOYA-designed if they didn’t include the company’s proprietary and patented Binocular Harmonization Technology.

  • What this does: Recalculates and adjusts the progressive power distribution according to a patient’s actual used positions on each lens so both eyes are given the exact same accommodation support.

Go on …

Four customized parameters are also highlighted in the lenses’ design.

  • Focus max optimization
    • Optimized design for additional support for near-vision distances
      • Ideal for sharper and more comfortable focus during desk activities or using digital devices
  • Binocular eye model
    • Encompasses five binocular evaluation methods for determining lens design performance (more on this in the next section)
  • Individualization
    • Design optimization for maximum visual comfort and improved all-distance vision fields
    • Considers: Patient measurements, individual wearing parameters, and frame choice
  • HOYA iSelect
    • Company’s complimentary interactive tool for lens recommendations

Circle back to those five evaluation methods for a moment.

HOYA’s binocular eye model was developed using five methods for performing a binocular evaluation.

These include:

  • Binocular clearance index
  • Convergence difference between right (R ) / left (L)
  • Accommodation demand difference between R/L
  • Magnification difference between R/L
  • Vertical prismatic difference between R/L

To note: Each of the methods focuses specifically on evaluating the binocular performance of different design variations.

Sounds like a potential game-changer for young presbyopes.

It definitely holds that promise. HOYA also outlined a few benefits eyecare providers may reap for both their patients and clinical practice.
