RadiusXR and Topcon Healthcare, Inc. are partnering with Glaukos Corporation to launch RadiusXR’s wearable vision testing platform, dubbed “Inspire by RadiusXR.”

To note: This platform is now the only commercially available platform of its kind to combine visual field (VF) correlated to the clinical standard.

Topcon and Glaukos need no intro … but tell me about RadiusXR.

The digital healthcare technology company specializes in vision testing and eyecare via an advanced digital platform.

About this platform: Designed as a portable vision diagnostic and patient engagement system, RadiusXR incorporates medical-grade diagnostics, business management tools, and patient education resources into one wearable spatial computing device.

  • The endgame goal: Enabling eye disease detection, better clinician management, and the treatment of sight-threatening conditions.

Didn’t RadiusXR and Glaukos already partner on the platform?

Good memory! And no, that was for the original RadiusXR platform.

A brief rundown on that initial partnership:

And is that platform clinically validated?

Indeed. The system was the subject of clinical research (conducted as the NOVA clinical trial) published in March 2024 in Translational Vision Science & Technology, in which the system was validated for its advanced diagnostic accuracy in VF testing for virtual reality perimetry.

See here and here for those details.

Explain the agreement between the two companies for that collaboration.

RadiusXR and Glaukos previously agreed that:

  • Glaukos would take over as exclusive sales agent to market, promote, and solicit orders for the platform within the United States.
  • RadiusXR would maintain its role in leading the platform’s development and commercialization.

Alrighty, now talk about this new platform and partnership.

The Inspire by RadiusXR platform is designed as a comprehensive ophthalmic imaging and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven data wearable diagnostic.

The basics: This device features a headset (similar to that of the original RadiusXR platform) intended to address key usability refinements based on customer feedback, according to the company.

Among its capabilities, the platform:

  • Incorporates VF testing correlated to the clinical standard (similar to the original RadiusXR platform)
  • Onboards patient education and data-driven intelligence (for more informed clinical decisions)
  • Extends “beyond traditional diagnostics” to enable testing for other chronic and systemic conditions (unlike the original RadiusXR platform)
  • Is intended to streamline vision testing for broader use by patients across the globe

So how is this different from the original headset?

RadiusXR told Glance that the Inspire headset introduces new components to address patients’ “comfort, ease of use, and accessibility,” including:

  • A longer cable for greater flexibility in setup and movement
  • More accessible focus sliders to simply users’ adjustments
  • Two light seal options (standard and wide) to accommodate a broader range of face shapes for better patient comfort and fit
  • A larger tablet

So … is Inspire an upgrade to the original platform?

Not exactly. RadiusXR shared that this new platform is “an evolution based on feedback from eyecare professionals” (ECPs) that provides additional refinements to enhance the overall user experience.

  • In other words: Inspire offers the same functionality as the original RadiusXR platform—just with a few more features.

And for those wondering if they can switch platforms: RadiusXR recommends reaching out to Topcon for more information on options.

Speaking of Topcon … how does it come into play with the new headset?

Keeping in mind those additional "bells and whistles” included with Inspire, Topcon brings its unique technology component to the clinically-validated platform.

As CEO Ali Tafreshi noted, data from the Inspire platform will be intelligently combined with Topcon’s robotic diagnostics featured on its Harmony digital health information platform.

Quick refresh on Harmony: This is a clinical image and data management platform that streamlines clinical practice workflows and organizes all ophthalmic clinical data via a single screen.

  • See here for its key features (and here for how it’s involved in Topcon’s previously-launched AI-based partnerships)

How else is the company involved in this?

Per the trio’s latest announcement, Topcon will become the exclusive global distributor of the Inspire platform and will coordinate with RadiusXR and Glaukos to expand the diagnostic platform’s footprint (via commercialization plans, research, and education).

And the intent behind this collaboration?

Ideally, the goal is to expand clinicians’ capabilities in providing VF exams and education to all glaucoma patients in need of the test.

Specifically: By integrating wearable vision testing with comprehensive ophthalmic imaging and AI-driven data analysis, the three “aim to expand access to high-quality eye care, enabling earlier disease detection, and driving smarter diagnostics.”

So when can we expect this platform to be readily available?
