Earlier this month, Blinkjoy introduced a new dry eye relief-based addition to its lineup of therapeutic eyecare products: the Blinkjoy Rechargeable Heat Mask.

Let’s start with this company.

Founded in 2021 and based in San Diego, California, Blinkjoy was launched by entrepreneur Justin Mendelson (a former product growth lead at Meta) after years of experiencing dry eye symptoms.

The company’s focus: Developing eyecare products targeted toward providing relief for chronic dry eye and improving overall ocular health.

Among its products:

*Currently only available in the United States.

Zero in on this rechargeable heat mask.

Blinkjoy’s newest addition incorporates “advanced heating technology with lightweight performance-knit fabric and plush padding” to provide wearers with heat for their dry or irritated eyes.

Designed to give patients “more control, comfort, and customization,” the heated mask features:

  • Multi-zone temperature control
    • Three heat levels activate the inner and outer (or both) heat zones to target eye relief
      • Heat settings: low (100°F); medium (108°F); high (113°F)
  • Fully adjustable eye pieces (to fit varying face shapes)
  • Cordless, rechargeable lithium-ion battery
    • Lasts three to five heating sessions per charge
      • Battery charging time: 2 to 3 hours
        • Charging port: USB-C attachment on device (with USB cable included)
    • Equipped with travel case for portability

So what’s the deal with heat therapy and the eye?

Previous research exploring the application of a hot compress to the eye has found this method to be a safe, simple, and convenient form of non-invasive treatment.

Its benefits have extended to not only providing ocular relief, but also increasing blood flow to the ocular surface—as well as a potential key treatment for glaucoma in the future.

Back to this mask. How long should it be worn?

Blinkjoy advises users should wear it one to two times each day (and if dry eye symptoms continue, reach out to their eyecare provider).

The duration of each session: 20 minutes (after which the mask will automatically shut off)

  • Take note: Contact lenses must be taken out prior to use so as to avoid any potential irritation or discomfort.

What ocular benefits come with wearing it?

Through this unique heat therapy component, Blinkjoy reported the rechargeable mask is intended to:

  • Increase tear film stability
    • How: By stimulating oil flow; preventing rapid tear evaporation; and improving long-term tear stability for long-term hydration
  • Relieve dry eyes
    • How: By liquefying blocked meibum oil (in the meibomian glands) to promote healthier tear film and reduce evaporative dry eye symptoms
  • Treat styes
    • How: By encouraging drainage and blood flow stimulation to expedite the healing process and reduce discomfort associated with styes
  • Support healthy lid hygiene
    • How: By softening debris and biofilm buildup along the eyelid margin to enable cleaning and reduce inflammation from bacteria and Demodex mites

Nice! So is this FDA-cleared?

While the mask (and Blinkjoy’s other therapeutic products) were designed with consultation from eyecare professionals to ensure their safety and efficacy for patients, the company noted that its products “are not considered medical devices and have not been evaluated by the U.S. FDA.”

Further: “They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition.”

  • In the case of this rechargeable mask: It’s simply intended to provide relief for symptoms.

Got it. How about FSA/HSA eligibility?

In the case of this mask: Yes, it is eligible for both Flexible Spendings Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA).
