Fresh off its debut of a new one-week replacement contact lens (CL) earlier this month, Alcon, Inc. is introducing expanded parameters for the TOTAL30 for Astigmatism monthly CL.
Let’s start with TOTAL30.
As part of the Alcon WaterInnovations lenses, this family of CLs is the first and only reusable monthly lenses featuring two key technologies designed for optimal patient comfort:
- Water Gradient Technology
- Includes nearly 100% water at the outermost lens surface, ensuring nothing comes in contact with the eye except “a gentle cushion of moisture”
- CELLIGENT Technology
- Enables 90% resistance to bacteria and lipids adherence for a cleaner lens while also helping the Water Gradient’s 30-day longevity
What other features are included?
The TOTAL30 lenses also:
- Are designed with the proprietary PRECISION BALANCE 8 | 4 lens design for on-eye stability
- Are available in both spheric toric and multifocal (MF)
- The TOTAL30 MF actually just launched last month
- Filters 34% of blue-violet light rays
- Blocks +90% ultraviolet (UV) A and B rays
Talk more about that PRECISION BALANCE design.
This patented, modified prism-ballast design for toric lenses features two anchor points (at 8 and 4 o’clock) in lieu of just one—as well as maximized oxygen transmissibility at 6 o’clock.
How it works: The upper lid provides pressure on the top of the lens to push it toward the lower lid, which then keeps the anchor points balanced for stabilization.
- The result: A wider optic zone that enables more reliable and consistent vision during both blinking and eye movements.
And the lens material for this astigmatism lens?
TOTAL30 for Astigmatism consists of a lehfilcon A lens material with a 55% core water content.
Now to those expanded parameters.
New to the lenses’ offering is a 2.75D cylinder—bringing its total number of parameters to 4,596.
See here for its complete sphere power, cylinder, and axis options.
What else is new?
Alcon is also offering new informative materials and signage to eyecare professionals (ECPs) regarding the TOTAL30 for Astigmatism’s expanded parameters.
ECPs are advised to contact their Alcon representative to access these materials—which are available in multiple languages—and visit the company website for additional patient resources.
Nice! Now explain why this lens is important.
“Because astigmatic patients disproportionately suffer from dryness and discomfort, the need for outstanding comfort and moisturization in a lens is paramount,” stated Max Wolf, general manager, Head of Vision Care and Contact Lenses.
Speaking on the lenses’ new parameter offerings, Jessilin Quint, OD, MBA, MS, FAAO, co-owner of Smart Eye Care in Maine, noted that previously, patients with astigmatism had few options and little choice but to compromise on their comfort.
“Having expanded parameters for TOTAL30 for Astigmatism is a game changer for my patients because of how well the lens performs and how easy it is to order,” Dr. Quint stated.
