MaximEyes.com ophthalmology electronic health records (EHR) has integrated with the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) Intelligent Research in Sight (IRIS) Registry.

First up: MaximEyes.com.

Developed by First Insight Corporation, a practice management software company, MaximEyes.com is marketed as an “all-in-one” resource that operates with the following modules:

Go on …

The platform features a user interface intended to simplify business functions for both optometry and ophthalmology practices.

  • Included in this: The self-guided Integrated Learning Center, MaximEyes.com’s built-in center for users to learn how-to documents, guides, video interviews, tutorials, and tips—along with online courses to test their knowledge and learn each of the system’s modules.

    • CLX System contact lens database integration

Next: The IRIS Registry.

Launched in 2014, the AAO’s comprehensive eye disease and condition registry is managed in partnership with Verana Health, a San Francisco, California-based digital health software company with a real-world data (RWD) network of data from 92 million patients via three data partnerships.

What it does: To date, the registry has collected data from +75 million patients, 454 million clinical visits, and 16,000 eye care professionals (ECPs) across the country.

Now tying it back to this integration …

First Insight and Verana Health have “configured (the MaximEyes) EHR data connections and mappings to provide data” to the IRIS Registry, where participants of the registry can access the data via a secure practice dashboard.

The intention behind this: To simplify incentive program compliance, according to Nitin Rai, First Insight president and CEO.

  • “Our company will continue to adopt standards and functionalities that make it possible for (ECPs) to safely and securely exchange EHR data,” Rai stated.

So what’s required for EHRs to participate in this integration?

Most importantly, an EHR must be ONC-Authorized Certification Body (ACB) and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) compliant.

  • ONC-ACBs are responsible for testing and certifying health IT products/systems against ONC-established standards and specifications.
  • FHIR is a global standard that enables third-party applications to access EHR system data as well as for sharing electronic healthcare data between different systems (enabling interchange data usage)

“Integrating with the IRIS Registry is a critical business function for ophthalmologists to provide quality patient healthcare,” stated Rai.

And MaximEyes.com is compliant?

Per First Insight, the EHR software is certified by an ONC-ACB (Drummond Group LLC, to be specific).

Also: The company noted that the FHIR application program interfaces (APIs) enable applications that are used by patients, clinicians, or health systems to “connect and interact with MaximEyes” by its products.
