Visionix USA is debuting a new feature to its next-generation Optovue Solix FullRange and Solix Essential optical coherence tomography (OCT) / OCT angiography (OCTA) systems: topography.
The new module was announced during the 2024 Vision Expo West (VEW) meeting this week.
Visionix sure has been busy as of late ...
Indeed it has been. Just in the last 13 months, the Illinois-based medical equipment manufacturer has:
- Launched the VX 610 non-mydriatic automated fundus camera (August 2024)
- Partnered with 20/20 NOW to:
- Debut a new teleoptometry program (March 2024)
- Add diabetic retinopathy (DR) telehealth screening to their program (April 2024)
- Introduced the Briot Attitude 3 edging system (August 2023)
Now let’s talk about these OCT/OCTA systems.
Visionix’s Optovue line of OCT systems extends to three product offerings:
- Optovue Solix
- Optovue Solix Essential Spectral Domain (SD)-OCT
- Optovue iScan 80
Start with Optovue Solix FullRange.
This 2-in-1 solution system features SOLIX, a new technology designed on the basis of high-speed SD-OCT.
About the platform: Eye care professionals (ECPs) can identify and manage multiple anterior and posterior pathologies via four key capabilities with just one scan:
- Full range of scans using split-spectrum amplitude-decorrelation angiography (SSADA) and motion-correction technology (MCT) to generate structural and vascular images
- Corneal and epithelial thickness mapping enabled by quantifying epithelial, stromal, and total corneal thickness via a 10 mm corneal layer map
- Capturing entire anterior chamber, from the cornea’s front surface to the lens’s anterior surface (18 mm x 6.25 mm)
- Maximized clinical utility due to an integrated fundus camera that provides internal and external color photography coupled with infrared (IR) imaging
And most importantly?
As Visionix has noted: The Optovue Solix FullRange is “the only OCT with FDA-cleared OCT-A metrics.”
Moving on to the Optovue Solix Essential SD-OCT.
Also incorporating high-speed SD OCT, this platform captures “state-of-the-art imaging from the cornea to the choroid,” according to Visionix.
Among its focus areas:
- Retina
- High-density (HD) retina scan patterns for maximum resolution and post-processing alignment
- Tracking of HD scans with SSADA and MCT (with vessel-to-vessel post-processing alignment)
- What this does: minimizes the scan location and movement effects during imaging acquisition, enabling amore precise registration
- Glaucoma
- Incorporates dual track, SSADA, MCT, and artificial intelligence (AI) segmentation
- Includes repeatability and reproducibility for a more precise system
- Incorporates dual track, SSADA, MCT, and artificial intelligence (AI) segmentation
- Anterior segment
- Performs a comprehensive anterior evaluation of pathologies—keratoconus and dry eye symptoms
- Conducted via pachymetry, epithelial thickness mapping, and 3D EnFace imaging
- Performs a comprehensive anterior evaluation of pathologies—keratoconus and dry eye symptoms
Do either of the systems incorporate similar features?
Yes! Specifically Visionix’s iWellness and AngioWellness.
The iWellness scan is an introductory OCT scan for patients that provides ECPs with data to potentially help identify ocular disease signs before they’re noticeable on a clinical eye exam.
The AngioWellness scan gives ECPs a comprehensive assessment of vasculature for diabetic patients and nerve fiber loss (glaucoma) suspects
- How it does this: By combining structural information on retinal and ganglion cell thickness with objective metrics on retinal vasculature.
And now this topography module, right?
Correct! This new module is available on both the Optovue Solix FullRange and Solix Essential systems to provide a more comprehensive eye assessment of the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces—all while differentiating between stroma and epithelial cells.
Specifically, it offers:
- Precise corneal measurements
- Used for: contact lens fittings and refractive surgery planning
- Earlier keratoconus detection
- Via: epithelial analysis and more detailed topography
- Postoperative monitoring
- Focusing on: corneal epithelial healing and refractive power outcomes
- More advanced “FullRange cornea and anterior chamber morphology”
- Customizable reports with six maps (simultaneously)
- Such as: anterior/posterior axial, tangential, power and elevation tomography maps
So where can I demo the new feature?
