Quantel Medical SAS is rolling out the POCKET III, a next-generation, handheld ultrasound pachymeter and the latest addition to the company’s ophthalmic ultrasound portfolio.

Refresh me on this company.

Founded in 1993 as a French brand, Quantel Medical is a subsidiary of Lumibird Medical, which was formed as a result of the 2020 merger between Quantel Medical, Optotek, and Ellex Medical Lasers.

The company specializes in manufacturing lasers—retinal lasers, to be specific—and medical ultrasound machines for diagnosing and treating eye diseases such as:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Diabetic retinopathy (DR)
  • Dry eye

Which brings us to the POCKET III.

Indeed. At just 60 grams, this lightweight device—currently the lightest on the market, according to the company—is designed to easily and accurately measure corneal thickness.

A few of its features include:

  • 30 MHz probe for a precise/extended measurement range (150-1,200 µm)
  • Accuracy:  ± 5 µm
  • Rechargeable (and, ideally, long-lasting) lithium-ion battery
  • Two modes: central measurement and corneal mapping

What kind of certification does it have?

The device is both FDA 510(k) approved in the U.S. and CE-marked in the European Union.

So how does this device compare to the POCKET II pachymeter?

A major distinction (and upgrade, for POCKET III) between the two devices is the measurement range. The POCKET II runs from only 200 to 999 µm—a much smaller range compared to the POCKET III.

Further: Unlike the POCKET III,  POCKET II is compatible with Echo Data Manager software, enabling exam data to be transferred to a PAC and then a server in DICOM and/or EMR format (we’ll explain the device’s compatibility later).

  • Plus: Both devices measure corneal thickness to an accuracy of ± 5 µm and include both central measurement and corneal mapping.

Gotcha. Now let’s talk IOP.

The new ergonomic and user-friendly (according to Quantel Medical) device collects intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements via such integrated tables of correlations between IOP and corneal thickness as:

  • Ehlers
  • Doughty
  • Dresdner

Plus: Its probe design allows for perpendicular positioning on the cornea.

I need a visual on this.

Watch the video below for a walkthrough of how to measure  properly.

What kind of connectivity does it include?

Data can be transferred from the pachymeter to a Windows-compatible computer via Bluetooth or USB-C using the proprietary POCKET III Manager software.

An added bonus: Up to 10 patients (20 eyes) can be saved).

And what comes with it?

When ordering the device, the following accessories are included:

  • A pachymeter holder with disinfection cup for probe tip
    • Convergence: 0.5 mm (0.02 in) from probe tip
  • USB-C cable
  • External wall mount adaptor (multi-blade)
  • Interchangeable blades kit for wall mount adaptor (5 Vcc, 10 W, 47-63 Hz, 90-264 Vac)

Nice! Can I demo this?

Absolutely! Click here to request a demo.
