Calling all retinal expert enthusiasts! Eyes On Eyecare’s The Pyramid Game: Retina Edition with Sponsored Presentation from Astellas is kicking off next month with an all-star cast of eyecare professionals (ECP).
Let’s start with a refresher on this game.
The original Pyramid Game premiered in 1973 as an American game show franchise developed by Bob Stewart and hosted by Dick Clark, with seven subsequent versions spawning from it both domestically and internationally.
The setup: Two contestants were each paired with a celebrity; players then attempted to guess a series of words or phrases based on descriptions given by their teammates.
The “pyramid” tie-in: A pyramid-shaped game board featured six categories arranged in a triangular configuration.
Gotcha. Now about this retina version … who’s hosting?
Jacob Lang, OD, FAAO, an adjunct professor of optometry for the Illinois College of Optometry and Salus University as well as residency coordinator for Associate Eye Care’s optometric residency program.
We asked him why clinicians should tune in.
His response: As a different competitive application of retinal knowledge, this eye-game show gives you the chance to witness retina experts “under the gun” of the timer—with no slides to read!
And the setup?
Featuring a live virtual studio audience, the game will follow three teams as the duos compete to guess words and phrases in retina-specific categories using clues from their teammates.
A few of those topics:
- Methods for diagnosing retinal disease (+ clinical images)
- Innovative approaches for treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and geographic atrophy (GA)
- Signs and symptoms indicating progression
- How the complement cascade may lead to retinal tissue damage
- Hallmark signs indicative of GA
Now the important question: Who’s competing?
Split into three teams, only some of the very best retinal experts in the field:
- PeIEYEtons:
- Jeffry D. Gerson, OD, FAAO
- Marc Bloomenstein, OD, FAAO
- Boston Buckeyes
- Mary Beth Yackey, OD
- Mile Brujic, OD, FAAO
- Intrepid Sisters
- Carolyn Majcher, OD, FAAO, FORS
- Cecelia Koetting, OD, FAAO, DipABO
Note: The two top teams from Series 1 will compete against each other in Series 2, which involves tougher and more complex content.
Any other specialty programming?
Yes! A sponsored presentation from Astellas Pharma, Inc. will accompany each of the games, giving teams another chance (regardless of who wins), to go up against retinal disease.
The first—titled Visualizing Geographic Atrophy (GA): The Importance of Early Detection for Early Protection—will be presented by Marc T. Dunbar, OD, FAAO, during Series 1 of the game.
During Series 2, Astellas’ Weslie Hamada, OD, FAAO, and Laura O’Connor—director and associate director of professional marketing, respectively—will present, giving clinicians a chance to learn about new advancements for treating GA secondary to AMD.
