M&S Technologies announced the U.S. launch of the M&S Bruder Ocular Surface Analyzer (BOSA), an all-in-one device intended for in-practice dry eye assessment.
Let’s start with this company.
Based in Niles, Illinois, M&S Technologies is a medical equipment manufacturing company specializing in providing computerized vision testing products in areas such as:
- Clinical trial suite
- General eye care
- Pediatric eye care
- Specialized products
- Contrast sensitivity testing
- Sports vision performance
See here for the full list, including product details.
Notable among its products is the Smart System (Standard and 2 | 2020 versions included), a custom-written visual acuity (VA) software.
Now this product.
Developed in partnership with Bruder Healthcare (who shares parent company Hilco Vision), the BOSA is marketed as an all-in-one device for advanced dry eye assessment and to treat ocular surface diseases (OSD) such as dry eye disease (DED).
Give me some details.
Per M&S, the device captures and provides OSD test results in just 15 seconds per eye.
The intended goal: for clinicians to create customizable treatment plans based on patient test results, with the ability to be used in tandem with any existing dry eye treatment technology, prescribed therapeutics, and at-home therapies.
What makes it unique?
In lieu of multiple dry eye tests, the one-stop device offers four non-invasive tests:
- Auto interferometry (for lipid layer thickness)
- Auto tear meniscus height
- Auto tear breakup time (TBUT)
- Auto blink evaluation
Does the device perform any other tests?
Yes! The BOSA is also reported to perform the following “in minutes:”
- Auto meibography (gland detection)
- Bulbar redness
- Fluorescein staining
- Lissamine green staining
- Pupillometry
- White-to-white
Note: The pupillomery and white-to-white exams measure the iris and pupil diameter in different light conditions
Further, the device is also designed to provide documentation for both demodex and blepharitis.
How does it present patient data?
Following testing, the BOSA presents a patient report intended to be both “clear” and “understandable” to enable treatment recommendations and proper patient education.
Any notable expert input?
Hilco Vision’s Brent Jones, global head of Vision Care Solutions Division, noted the system’s “unmatched speed, accuracy, and ease of use” are designed to allow clinicians to more efficiently and effectively manage dry eye patients, with the potential to improve outcomes via better data and boost revenues via time savings.
Lastly … where can I find it?
Per M&S, the BOSA is expected to be available in early 2024. Meanwhile, the company and Bruder representatives are in talks to potentially bundle the device with other Bruder products for potential further savings and efficiency.
