Reichert Technologies, a business of AMETEK, Inc. is launching an exclusive partnership with SBM Sistemi to distribute eyecare-based technologies within the United States.

Give me a rundown on these companies.

Let’s start from the beginning and fast forward to today.:

Founded in 1930 and headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, AMETEK is a multinational conglomerate and global designer / manufacturer of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices. The company operates at 130 locations in 30 countries around the globe.

Reichert Technologies is a business unit of AMETEK based in Buffalo, New York, where it designs and manufactures high-quality diagnostic instruments and equipment for eyecare professionals (ECPs).

Notable products include:

SBM Sistemi, based in Turin, Italy, is a privately-held company that specializes in engineering ophthalmic innovations for the management of dry eye disease (DED).

Now this collaboration.

As part of the partnership, Reichert will distribute SBM’s imaging and dry eye assessment and treatment devices.

To note, these technologies feature patient and data management software for ECPs to review and instantaneously diagnose patients following testing.

Talk about the technology.

Included in the deal are three devices:

  • Reichert-SBM IDRA
    • Evaluates all three tear film layers—lipd, aqueous, and mucin—and the meibomian glands to identify specific DED types
    • Provides personalized treatment recommendations
    • Designed for quick and non-invasive DED assessment
  • Reichert-SBM OS1000
    • Integrated diagnostic platform
    • Combines a corneal topographer with DED assessment (for various DED and topography testing capabilities)
    • Intended to minimize capital expense for practices
    • Designed for quick and non-invasive DED assessment
  • Reichert-SBM DEM100-DSLC200
    • Anterior imaging camera system
    • Compatible with wide range of slit lamps
    • Available with comprehensive DED assessment
  • Reichert-SBM ACTIVA
    • In-office, non-invasive thermal heat pulsation device for relieving MGD symptoms and evaporative dry eye
    • Uses controlled heating and micro-vibrations to stimulate meibomian glands (for lasting symptom relief)

So why partner on this?

Per Ian Lee-Bennett, Reichert Technologies’ division vice president and business unit manager, the collaboration on these devices enables Reichert to expand and build on its portfolio of distributed products within the eyecare space.

And when can we expect to see these products in the US?

The companies have not yet set a launch date for introducing these products to the U.S. market… so stay tuned for updates in the new year!
