Alcon’s SMARTCataract application is officially commercially available in the United States.
Where to start?
SMARTCataract is the company’s first application in its comprehensive cloud-based platform for surgical ophthalmic practices.
And this platform is … ?
SMART Solutionsis a cloud-based digital health solutions (DHS) platform exclusively designed for ophthalmology practices.
The platform is designed to link data systems, surgical equipment, and the majority of diagnostic devices (see below) with cataract surgical equipment, according to Alcon:
- ARGOS Biometer with Image Guidance
- LenSx Femtosecond Laser
- LuxOR Revalia Ophthalmic Microscope
- Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA) SYSTEM with VerifEye+
How does it work?
SMART Solutions places all pre-op planning information within the cloud for one or multiple clinician users to access, allowing for the creation, review, and revising of surgical plans both in and out of the clinical practice.
See more about its optimization, security, and collaborative services here.
Gotcha. And the SMARTCataract’s role?
Per the company’s info, it automatically evaluates patient data and considers a surgeon’s preferences, preferred formulas, and lens types to guide their surgical planning—cutting down on critical time.
The app is designed to eliminate the need for manual intraocular (IOL) power calculation during surgical planning and reduce the number of transcription points needed through the cataract surgery workflow, according to Alcon.
Any clinical data on it?
Actually, yes … the SMARTCataract was found to demonstrate significant time saved during the following settings for cataract patients:
- Evaluation
- Planning process
- Operating room
- Postop workflow
Be a little more specific.
Based on patient type, time saved (compared to traditional methods) was:
- 4.3 minutes (non-astigmatic non-post-refractive patients)
- 12.6 minutes (astigmatic patients)
- 13.8 minutes (post-refractive patients)
Okay … so where can I demo this?
Check out the SMARTCataract app at the Alcon booth (#639) on the last day of AAO.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting is being held Nov. 3-6, 2023, in San Francisco, California.
