Topcon Healthcare introduces TEMPO Perimeter

Topcon Healthcare is launching its newest visual field (VF) testing device: the TEMPO Perimeter.

Is this the company’s first perimeter?

Nope! Topcon previously released the Henson 9000, which is marketed as a compact, easy-to-use perimeter for detecting and monitoring VF changes.

So how is this new perimeter unique?

The TEMPO incorporates a binocular approach designed to provide quicker, more accurate, and enhanced comfort during the test for a glaucoma patient (with reduced fatigue).

Give me a stat on it.

The perimeter has demonstrated a performance improvement that is 39% faster than Standard Automated Perimetry (SAP), as evidenced by recent research published in the Journal of Glaucoma.

Other features include:

  • SAP test patterns
  • Functionality in ambient light
  • No patch requirement

Let’s talk capabilities.

The perimeter includes a random binocular feature capable of testing both eyes separately while also randomly presenting the test stimuli to either eye in a “nonocclusion manner” without a patient’s awareness of which eye is being tested, according to a Research Square study.

How does this benefit VF testing?

Based on that same study, because a patient is not able to recognize in which eye a stimulus is presented, “it has been reported that this test method may be useful in the evaluation of functional VF loss,” the study authors reported.

Examples given for this included malingering or psychological disorders, “which have been challenging to evaluate objectively.”

Gotcha. So can this be connected to anything?

Yes it can! Providing it’s the Topcon Harmony image and data management solution, that is.

Quick refresher: Harmony is a clinical management system designed to streamline practice workflows and organize all ophthalmic clinical data within one solution.

Go on …

By connecting with the Harmony system, all data —optical coherence tomography , fundus photography, and perimetry included—is viewable on a single screen.

The system also includes a DICOM Modality Worklist (DMWL) function, which can aid in eliminating any redundant patient data entry, transcription errors, and duplicates, according to Topcon.

So… how can I demo the TEMPO?

Funny you should ask … Topcon is hosting a live demo at its booth (#5639) during the meeting—not to mention an unveiling ceremony on Saturday.
