Six months after receiving 510(k) clearance from the FDA, Centricity Vision, Inc. announced the commercial launch of the ZEPTOLink IOL Positioning System during the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting.
Give me the rundown on this.
The ZEPTO system is the first and currently only device of its kind, applying 12 micropulses of energy in 4 milliseconds to produce instantaneous capsulotomy for an exact 360° IOL overlap on a patient’s visual axis.
The results are potentially improved, long-term visual outcomes for patients.
Explain how it works.
The system utilizes any commercially available phaco system’s suction and irrigation functionality to give surgeons full control over the handpiece, suction, and energy delivery.
Three steps are included:
- Insertion of the hand tip via a 2.2+ mm incision.
- Suction delivery of the centered handpiece tip close to the lens capsule.
- Application of energy micropulses (forming the capsulotomy) and removal of the device through the main incision.
See here for a visual step-by-step walkthrough.
Let’s talk features.
Included in the system is a modern touchscreen display with voice-supported functions and a dedicated ZEPTOLink handpiece—with two nitinol ring size options.
The intended result: an efficient set-up and priming (of the handpiece) by just one surgeon.
So what makes it unique?
By integrating with any phaco system, ZEPTO has a small footprint in the operating room.
The result: a potential for time saved as well as providing surgeons with complete control (via a phaco foot pedal) to deliver precise and well-centered capsulotomies for effective lens positioning.
What kind of chamber depth can be used?
Centricity Vision recommends a chamber depth of 2.5 to 3.75 mm for initial cases as part of the surgeon's learning curve; however, they may choose a more posterior location for the primary incision and minimize ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) use to compensate for a deeper chamber.
Can it be reused?
Nope, the disposable handpiece is intended for one-time use only.
Are pediatric capsulotomies permissible with it?
According to the company, pediatric capsulotomies are currently contraindicated.
Gotcha. I could’ve sworn there was research on ZEPTO PPC recently …
Good memory!
In July 2023, a Centricity Vision-sponsored study (published in Clinical Ophthalmology) compared the use of ZEPTO Precision Pulse Capsulotomy (PPC) to Continuous Curvilinear Capsulorhexis (CCC) in cataract surgery.
As a special note, Mark Vital, MD, one of the study’s authors, spoke with the President of Visionary Medical Education, LLC, Michael S. Cooper, OD, about those findings. Click here for that video interview, as well as our full coverage.
What if I’m already a ZEPTO user?
Per Centricity Vision, all existing users of the previous ZEPTO system will be upgraded to ZEPTOLink following the AAO 2023 meeting.
Speaking of AAO … can I demo this?
Absolutely! Check out the new system at Centricity Vision’s booth (#827)!
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting is being held Nov. 3-6, 2023, in San Francisco, California.
