Heidelberg Engineering announced that the FDA has cleared its ANTERION platform, designed to provide high-resolution visualization of the entire anterior segment.
Quick refresher on this company, please.
The German-based Heidelberg Engineering is a high-tech imaging solutions company that designs, manufactures, and distributes ophthalmic diagnostic devices.
Now this product.
ANTERION is an upgradable platform that incorporates biometry, intraocular pressure (IOP) power calculation with the following diagnostic technologies for daily clinical workflows:
- Corneal topography
- Corneal tomography
- Anterior chamber metrics
- High-resolution imaging
Talk about its features.
The platform includes proprietary components such as patented eye tracking and composite imaging technologies that enable eyecare professionals (ECPs), “to perform anterior segment examinations and acquire key measurements” via high-resolution, swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).
So what does this platform include?
The Imaging App (a key component to the platform; FDA cleared in November 2021) targets a high-resolution visualization of the entire anterior segment—from the anterior surface of the cornea to the posterior surface of the lens—to provide detailed OCT images for diagnosing and managing anterior segment alterations.
Plus, there’s three FDA-cleared apps to go with the platform that address specific clinical needs (but more on that below).
Give me the details on these.
Here's the big three:
- The Cataract App
- Uses key measurements for cataract surgery pre-op planning (integrated monofocal and toric IOL calculators), including corneal analysis, anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness, and axial length (AL).
- Assesses wavefront aberrometry metrics, total power for IOL selection, and refractive accuracy.
- The Cornea App
- Offers comprehensive corneal measurement sets for evaluating patients’ corneal geometry (for surgical planning, refractive procedure evaluations).
- The Metrics App
- Includes SS-OCT images featuring radial view of the anterior chamber; predefines angle parameters and allows for free-hand measurements.
- Offers anterior chamber volume, lens thickness, and white-to white.
Where can I learn more about this new platform?
If you’re attending the 2023 American Academy of Optometry (AAOPT) annual meeting, you’re in luck!
