The American Academy of Optometry (AAOPT) launched its first issue of Clinical Insights in Eyecare (CLE)—a new, digital-based, peer-reviewed case report journal.

That’s exciting! Tell me more.

Originally launched in Summer 2023, the online, open-access platform is a monthly publication featuring “journal scans,” in synopsis style-reporting from Ophthalmology—the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) flagship journal—and its subspecialty journals.

To note, unlike CLE, the AAO’s journals are not open access.

Who’s leading the publication?

Joseph P. Sholvin, OD, FAAO, is editor-in-chief, while Raman Bhakhri, OD, FAAO, serves as associate editor.

See here for a look at CLE’s Editorial Review Board.

Are they accepting submissions?

Yes! Per the journal, CLE is open to submissions of both original and unpublished case reports/series with clinical relevance to eye care, as well as journal scans and point-counterpoints.

Talk more about these case reports.

Per the journal, case reports should highlight any of the following clinical educational areas:

  • Diagnostic dilemmas
  • Clinical technology applications
  • Treatment effects/considerations

Case reports do not need to highlight rare events, per se.

“Your submission might describe a clinical entity that is seen periodically in most clinics, but the current understanding of the pathophysiology, the diagnostic thought process, the evidence-based treatment options, and the clinical trials that help to define standards of care are not universally known in our community,” according to CLE.

Is original research accepted, too?

Not in this case; the journal is focused more on case reports and series rather than original research and investigations.

Gotcha. So how do I submit a case report ?

Great question! A “For authors” page (see here) offers everything you need to know regarding how and where to submit , as well as what to include in your case reports, including:

  • Article types
  • Patient consent
  • Ethical considerations
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Authorship requirements

… just to name a few.

And click here to take a look at the CLE’s case report submission checklist, which has the rundown on formatting, references, and any tables/figures/images.

Any fees with these submissions?

Oh yes. A publication fee is required upon all article acceptances:

$50 for the following AAOPT groups:

  • Fellows
  • Fellowship candidates
  • Resident members
  • Student members

For non-AAOPT members, a $200 fee is required (I know… big jump in price).

Good to know … so tell me about this month’s first issue.

Per CLE, this issue highlights a point-counterpoint discussion from the Glaucoma Section, focusing on addressing management of angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) (read here).
