Alcon announced the global launch of TOTAL30 Multifocal (MF) contact lenses for patients diagnosed with presbyopia.

Give me some background first.

For patients aged 45 to 55, an estimated 80% will be diagnosed with presbyopia. And with this demographic of 40+, lens dryness, discomfort, and visual acuity (VA) issues often can cause contact lens wearers to switch to bifocals or reading glasses.

Further, digital device usage is on the rise—with eye dryness a growing issue.

How does this relate to these new lenses?

The TOTAL30 Multifocal lenses are designed to target digital device dryness.

And the TOTAL30 portfolio as a whole?

Alcon’s TOTAL30 contact lenses are the first and currently only reusable lenses to feature Alcon’s Water Gradient Technology, a proprietary water technology (more on that in a moment) that can deliver “nearly 100% water at the surface of the lens.”

To note, all TOTAL30 lenses are monthly replacements.

See the product lineup here.

Real quick … talk more about this technology.

The proprietary material, initially introduced with Alcon’s Dailies TOTAL1 contact lenses, implements a gradual increase to almost total water at the outermost surface of the lens, which can lead to high breathability and enhanced comfort..

Gotcha. Now more about the TOTAL30 MF.

Targeted toward presbyopic patients, these lenses are intended to be worn on a monthly basis.

The design features Alcon’s Precision Profile, a MF optical design that enables wearers to have clear and uninterrupted vision at both near and far distances.

To note, this design is also used in the company’s DAILIES TOTAL1 Multifocal and AIR OPTIX  plus Hydraglyde MF contact lenses.

What’s their power range?

Per Alcon, the lenses are available via a full power range of +6.00 D to -10.00 D (in 0.25D steps) and three ADD powers (low, medium, high).

To note, the TOTAL30 MF are classified as medical devices, requiring a prescription for use in the United States.

And where are they launching, exactly?

Per Alcon, the lenses are launching within the U.S. and select international markets.

Additional information, including timing and specific global market locations, are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Where can I find them, in the meantime?

Alcon is introducing the TOTAL30 MF lenses during the American Academy of Optometry (AAOPT) annual meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana (Booth #1019) October 11-14, 2023.

Further, attendees can try on the company’s recently-introduced TOTAL30 for Astigmatism lenses during an exclusive, invitation-only preview.
