Hubble Contacts announced the launch of its latest contact lens: SkyHy by Hubble, a silicone hydrogel daily lens.
Let’s start with this company.
Founded in 2016, Hubble— via its parent company Vision Path, Inc— is an online seller of direct-to-consumer, prescription- and subscription-based daily contact lenses and eyeglasses at low costs.
The company’s lenses are manufactured by St. Shine Optical Co, a Taiwanese company based in Taipei.
Before we get to this new lens … what other types does the company offer?
Two contact lenses: Classic and Hydro.
Per the Hubble website, the Classic lenses are made of Methafilcon A, a copolymer of hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), and methacrylic acid—approved by the FDA in 1986—which registers a 55% water content and offers ultraviolet (UV) protection with a thin edge design feature.
The Hydro is made of Hioxifilcon A material, which is also FDA approved.
Gotcha. Now this product.
The SkyHy by Hubble lenses are designed with a silicone hydrogel material: Olifilcon B, which offers a Dk/t of 150 for high oxygen transmissibility, allowing more oxygen to pass through the lens to the cornea.
Three other key features are included:
- Soft flex material
- Intended to enable the lenses to mold to the curvature of the eye for maximum comfort
- Smart fit design
- Smart multi-curvature design for preventing unwanted lens movement and promoting tear exchange (even through blinking)
- Natural eye hydration
- Application of special surface technology and lens curvature to encourage wettability and all-day hydration
So how does this lens compare to the Classic and Hydro lenses?
Per Hubble, this lens is also FDA-approved and shipped directly to consumers for free as part of a customizable subscription model.
Aside from that, the type of material and subsequent water contents are the only other major differentiators:
- Hioxifilcon A (Hydro): 57% water
- Methafilcon A (Classic): 55% water
- Olifilcon B (SkyHy): 47% water
To note, Hioxifilcon A is used in soft, aspheric contact lenses for the correction of visual acuity in aphakic and non-aphakic patients with non-diseased eyes with myopia or hyperopia.
So how much do they cost?
Per Hubble, the SkyHy lenses are available for subscribers at 40% off with their first month’s subscription ($17.99 per eye).
After the first month, they’re priced at $29.99 per eye plus $3 for shipping/handling per delivery.
