Zenni Optical has partnered with Meta in launching virtual reality (VR) prescription lens inserts for the Meta Quest 3 headset.

Let’s start with Zenni Optical.

Launched in 2003 and based in San Francisco, Zenni Optical is an online eyewear company focused on offering affordable and accessible prescription eyewear.

The company manufactures each prescription lens in-house and offers prescription glasses starting at $6.95 (with an average of just over $40).

And the Meta Quest 3?

This is a next-generation, VR headset developed by a division of Meta (Reality Labs) that offers consumers a mixed virtual reality, immersive experience.

Compared to its previous version—Meta Quest 2—this latest design features a 30% leap in visual resolution, 40% louder audio range for enhanced 3D surround sound, and is more thinly shaped for added user comfort along with the ability to be worn over glasses.

Is this currently available?

Not yet … the headset is being released on October 10.

What’s the cost?

The headset starts at $499.99 with 128GB of storage while a $649.99 configuration is available for users who want a larger 512GB of free space. Pre-order here.

So what led to this collaboration?

According to Zenni Optical Chief Technology Officer David Ting, the Zenni and Meta launched its collaboration following the 2023 Vision Expo East.

The companies began working together shortly after on the optical product side—starting from conception to reality within 6 months—with rigorous Consumer Electronics Testing conducted over that time period.

Gotcha. Now talk about these lenses.

Made with an anti-scratch and anti-reflective coating, the VR Prescription Lenses are designed to provide a seamless VR experience for patients in need of corrective eyewear via the Meta Quest 3.

How do they work?

The single-vision lenses attach to the headset via placement between the eyes and the original headset lenses.

Per Zenni, they’re intended to provide clearer vision as well as no image distortion effect to colors.

What makes them unique?

The lenses are designed to be:

  • Lightweight
  • Fitted thin and securely
  • Prescription-specific
  • Easy to install

What prescriptions do they fit?

  • Sphere (SPH) of -9.00 to +6.00
  • Cylinder (CYL) of -4.00 to +4.00

Can they be fitted with previous versions of the Meta Quest?

Nope; these lenses are custom-fit just for the Meta Quest 3—they’re not compatible with Meta Quest 2 or Meta Quest Pro.

How about other lens types?

That’s a no-go for bifocal and progressive lenses.

Per the company, the lenses’ small and curved design are challenging to fit with other multifocal prescriptions

“Moreover, the fixed distances between the lenses in VR headset can cause distortion of blurriness for users with bifocal or progressive prescriptions,” Zenni stated.

Gotcha. So what do I get if I order these?

  • Two lens inserts (with L/R marks)
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Carrying case
  • Installation instructions

Does insurance cover them?

According to Zenni, vision plans are not accepted. However, “some insurance companies will accept an invoice copy for reimbursement,” the company stated.

What about FSA/HSA?

Yes! The company accepts FSA and HSA debit cards at checkout.

So how much do they cost?

The lenses start at $49.99. To note, they include an oil-resistant coating with a $9.99 value (currently excluded from the price).

When will they be available?

October 10! Pre-ordering officially opened on September 27; any pre-orders submitted by October 10 will be given free U.S. shipping.

And where can I place my order?

Just fill out your current prescription details and submit here.

Any opportunities for a demo?

Yes! Zenni is introducing the lenses during Vision Expo West in Las Vegas, Nevada (Booth #P18025), being held September 27-30, 2023.
