OCULUS, Inc. and LUVO Medical announced a new partnership to support the launch of two specialty care devices into the U.S. ophthalmic market: LUVO LUCENT and DARWIN with intense pulsed light (IPL) and radio frequency therapy.
Let’s start with these companies.
Founded in 1999 and with locations in Washington State and Florida, OCULUS, Inc. (USA) is an arm of OCULUS, an ophthalmic diagnostic devices company headquartered in Germany.
Its products include (but are not limited to):
- Pentacam
- Keratograph 5M
- Easyfield C
Founded in 2011 and based in Cambridge, Canada, LUVO is a medical equipment supplier of aesthetic technologies such as IPL, laser hair removal, radio frequency, microneedling, and other technologies.
Now the products.
We’ll start with the IPL therapy portion.
LUVO’s LUCENT IPL and DARWIN multimodality workstation systems are designed to offer several benefits such as an advanced cooling system and four pulse modes (operating at 3500 Watts; 3 to 35 ms pulse duration) for patient comfort.
With one handpiece, eyecare practitioners (ECPs) can choose between seven expert filters (ranging from 430 nm to 755 nm) to treat various conditions—all while potentially reducing errors and improving safety via a filter detection technology.
What else?
Three light guide filters are available for patients along with a user-friendly interface with LCD touch screens and built-in presets.
What about the thermal radio frequency?
The Thermal Radio Frequency (TRF) handpiece is included with the DARWIN, complete with three different tip sizes and two treatment modes:
- TRF Tip R (rubbing mode)- larger round tip size
- TRF Tip S (shot mode)- block tip
- TRF Tip E (rubbing mode)- fine round tip size
According to the companies, the workstation utilizes proprietary Non-Pole Thermal Structure (NTTS) technology to deliver focused and uniform thermal energy to heat a targeted area.
Talk more about these modes.
The two modes are designed to provide effective volumetric heating and therapeutic tissue simulation:
- Shot mode
- Shoots intensive thermal RF energy to deep dermal tissue to promote collagen remodeling
- Rubbing mode
- Delivers RF energy delicately to the epidermal tissue in a smooth and safe manner
What are the benefits to these products?
Per the companies, the two technologies enable ECPs to manage patients and offer treatments in-practice rather than referring to other providers.
And lastly .. where can I go to see these in-person?
You’re in luck! OCULUS will be introducing the LUCENT IPL and DARWIN for the first time at Vision Expo West in Las Vegas, Nevada (Booth #F13053), being held September 27-30, 2023.
And if you can’t make that, they’ll also be at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in San Francisco, California, November 3-6, 2023 (Booth #1431).
