Shamir Optical Industry Ltd. has launched a new lens solution called Shamir Driver Intelligence, designed as two sets of lenses for providing drivers with optimal vision during all driving conditions.
Refresh me on the company.
Headquartered in Israel and with locations in 23 countries (including the United States), Shamir Optical Industry is an international developer and manufacturer of optical lenses.
The company specializes in custom-designed lens technology—including single-vision and progressive lenses for innovative lens performance.
Now talk about this new technology.
The Shamir Driver Intelligence consists of two pairs of driver-dedicated lenses designed to give wearers sharp and clear vision with less glare at any time of day as well as in low light conditions when driving.
Two pairs of lenses?
Yup! Called Sun and Moon, each pair is available as either a single or progressive additional lens.
Go on …
Sun lenses— for daytime driving—are designed to enhance color perception and are available in four different tints with an advanced anti-reflective coating for reducing sun glare.
Moon lenses—for low-light conditions and nighttime driving—include a visual age-based myopic shift for improved low-light sharpness. They’re also designed to reduce visual noise, eye fatigue, and reaction times.
What kind of material are they made of?
The lenses feature the company’s Shamir Glacier Expression, which is an anti-reflective coating available in hard resin, Trivex, and polycarbonate.
The coating is designed to provide:
- Increased contrast sensitivity (by 25%)
- A reduction in visual noises and eye fatigue
- Improved reaction time (more on that in a moment)
- Scratch-resistant durability
- Dirt, dust, and water repellent
- Anti-static properties
How were these tested?
Via the company’s optical performance partnership with the Renault Group BWT Alpine 51 Team, the lenses were developed and tested on an actual race track.
Other research included extensive head movements and eye-tracking measurements as well as artificial intelligence (AI) elements, according to Shamir.
Any visual benefits to these lenses?
Vision benefits might include:
- Improved night vision via myopic shift compensation and low-reflection coating
- 16% reduction in visual info processing effort (vs regular lenses)
- 33% wider horizontal visual field (VF)
- 18% longer vertical VF
- 15% faster night reaction time
- 11% faster daylight reaction time
Anything else?
The company reported increased road awareness, lower cognitive loads for improved visual processing, as well as optimal physical comfort (translating to less visual strain).
So where can I find these lenses?
No word yet from the company … but stay tuned!
