The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) has named SriniVas R. Sadda, MD, as president elect for 2023-2024.

Give me a rundown on Dr. Sadda.

Dr. Sadda is the Director of Artificial Intelligence & Imaging Research at the Doheny Eye Institute in Pasadena, California, as well as Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA) David Geffen School of Medicine.

What are his areas of research?

His major focus areas include:

  • Automated retinal image analysis
  • Retinal substructure assessment
  • Advanced retinal imaging technologies
  • Vision restoration approaches

Other clinical specialties include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), hereditary retinal degenerations, telemedicine screening and consultation programs, and electronic medical records (EMRs).

Tell me about his background

According to the Doheny Eye Institute, Dr. Sadda—an internationally-recognized retina expert—has received consistent funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and multiple private organizations such as the Foundation Fighting Blindness and Research to Prevent Blindness, to name a few.

He is also the founder and Emeritus Director of the Doheny Image Reading Center, a leading research facility for clinical trials, out of UCLA’s Stein Eye Institute.

At ARVO, he has served on the Board of Trustees for the last 3 years.

Gotcha. So who’s the current president?

The 2023-2024 president is Patricia A. D’Amore, PhD, MBA, FARVO, who began her term in April 2023 and will continue through May 2024.

What’s the plan for this transition?

Dr. Sadda will continue serving on ARVO’s board through May 2024 until his term begins as President, commencing at the conclusion of ARVO’s annual meeting.
