UnitedHealthcare announced last week that it will offer a new online-based option for renewing contact lens and glasses prescriptions.

Who is eligible?

The virtual renewal features are available to UnitedHealthcare members who are enrolled in the health insurance company’s eligible employer-sponsored vision plans.

Give me more details.

The new option includes an expedited way to renew unchanged optical prescriptions as a value-add service—not a replacement for in-person, comprehensive eye exam appointments already covered in a member’s plan.

Further, 24/7 access for online screening allows members to determine their visual capabilities with their current prescription.

Who is offering new prescriptions?

According to UnitedHealthcare, board-certified ophthalmologists licensed in a member’s state are typically available within 4 business hours of a request.

*Glance has reached out to the company to confirm that no board-certified optometrists will be providing prescriptions.

Are there any additional costs?

Per the company, members in most states are able to renew their single-vision glasses or contact lens prescription via their computer or mobile device, at no additional cost to their current plan.

Speaking of location …

Due to state regulations, this new virtual option may not be available for all members; click here to check available plans in your area.
