On June 9, 2023, Eyes On Eyecare’s third-annual Eyes On Glaucoma event drew more than 2,400 attendees in the eye care space.

Let’s start with the bigger picture, first.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, with roughly 3 million people in the United States diagnosed with the disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), half of all people with glaucoma don’t even know that they have the condition.

And the call to action?

As the global population ages, eyecare practitioners (ECPs) around the world must expand their knowledge of glaucoma diagnosis, management, and treatment.

Blindness caused by glaucoma is irreversible; luckily, glaucoma therapeutics have progressed in leaps and bounds even in the last decade to mitigate the severity of visual loss.

Now … what is Eyes On Glaucoma?

As the largest virtual event dedicated to glaucoma, this one-day virtual event focused on clinical topics like:

  • Therapeutic and surgical update for glaucoma in 2023
  • Glaucoma case files in diagnostic interpretation
  • The Dossier Report: Working through complexities in glaucoma treatment

Speakers included:

  • Eric E. Schmidt, OD, FAAO
  • Nathan Lighthizer, OD, FAAO
  • Carolyn Majcher, OD, FAAO, FORS
  • WIlliam Sponsel, MD
  • Madeleine Hasbrook, MD

Give me some numbers.

June 9, 2023. The event included over 4,800 hours of education consumed by attendees as well as  2,600 collective opt-in sponsor leads and 26 product inquiries.

Where was it held?

Virtually and globally.

With three sessions in the clinical track—and delivering up to 3 CE credits—and six sessions in the implementation track, eyecare professionals (ECPs) around the globe came together to learn and share glaucoma diagnosis, treatment, and management strategies.

What other glaucoma news is there?

In May 2023, Eyes On Eyecare surveyed 505 optometrists in the United States and Canada who treated glaucoma.

The result of this survey is the 2023 Glaucoma Report. As with all Eyes On Eyecare reports, the report is free to download.
