The FDA has granted Norlase 501(k) clearance for its ECHO Green Pattern Laser photocoagulator.

Talk about this technology.

An industry first, the ECHO is a portable scanning laser photocoagulator incorporating micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology for rapid pattern delivery.

Both the laser and scanner are fully integrated into a single delivery device that attaches to a compatible slit-lamp.

This isn’t Norlase’s first laser solution, right?

Nope; it’s actually the third. Other products include:LEAF, an ultra-compact laser photocoagulator that is 10 times smaller than standard systems and mounts directly on the slit-lamp.

LION, is the first fully integrated, battery-powered laser indirect ophthalmoscope (LIO) and green laser.

Give me some feature details.

Included in the ECHO are the following:

  • Full pattern palette (including grids, circle, and triple arc)
  • μSec Mode for tissue-sparing treatment
  • Fiberless design (to cut down on costly service repairs)
  • Voice-controlled patterns and parameters
  • Wireless user interface

What makes it unique?

The ECHO has the smallest physical footprint in the laser solution industry and has been noted as being available at an affordable price point—a key feature to making the technology accessible to more physicians across the globe, according to the company.

Anything else notable?

In addition to FDA approval, the ECHO also received CE Mark approval from the European Union to be sold within the European market.

Significance?

According to Norlase CEO and co-founder Oliver Vidt, the launch of ECHO brings a new paradigm to ophthalmologists treating retina and glaucoma conditions.
