A study published in the Journal of Glaucoma found an association between tinnitus and primary open-angle glaucoma.

The study details.

The authors included 542,682 patients from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database with a first-time diagnosis of tinnitus. Using more than 1.6 million propensity score–matched controls, the data were analyzed to estimate the odds of prior POAG among cases versus controls.

What did they find?

Of all study patients, 3.93% had POAG before the index date of tinnitus (4.70% of cases and 3.67% of controls). Multiple logistic regression analyses showed a significant association between prior POAG and tinnitus.

The take home.

The study found that patients with POAG have a higher risk of tinnitus compared with those without the disease, after accounting for sociodemographic characteristics and medical comorbidities.
