Investigators at the University of Waterloo conducted a study and found that aerobic exercise can be another remedy for relieving dry, itchy eyes.

Tell me about the study.

A total of 52 participants were divided into two groups: athletes and non-athletes. Participants in the athlete group exercised at least five times per week and non-athletes exercised no more than once per week.

Researchers performed vision examinations before and 5 minutes after each exercise session, assessing tear secretion and tear breakup time.

What did they find?

Although participants in the athlete group showed the largest increase, all participants experienced a meaningful boost in tear quantity and tear film stability after the exercise session.

The take home.

Heinz Otchere, a PhD candidate in vision science at Waterloo, commented that the findings show that physical activity can be really important, not just for overall well-being, but for ocular health, too. (via)
